Forthcoming Lenten day of recollection at Ladyewell

Update 6 March 2011: Because of fire damage at Ladyewell, the day of recollection has had to be postponed. There's no new date yet, but the organisers hope that a suitable date will be found in September.

I am delighted that Fr Armand de Mallery FSSP will, by kind permission of Rev. Fr Thomas Hoole, P.P. and Shrine Director, be in Preston on Saturday, 19 March 2011 to lead a Lenten day of recollection on the Solemnity of St Joseph at Ladyewell Shrine, Fernyhalgh.

Schedule

1100: Morning conference: St Joseph, a model of obedience

1200: Confessions and Holy Mass (usus antiquior)

1300: Time to eat packed lunches

1400: Afternoon conference: St Joseph, a model of hope

1500: Exposition, Confessions (during Adoration) and Benediction

Latin Mass Society Priests' Training Activities Appeal for Donations

One of the most important tasks of the Latin Mass Society is training priests in the celebration of Mass and of other rites in their traditional form. Since 2007 over 100 priests have attended priests' training conferences run by the LMS. Most of these priests are now regularly celebrating Mass in the Extraordinary Form in parishes across the country. No other organisation is providing this kind of training in England or Wales.

In 2010 the LMS spent £20,000 on priests' training conferences at Downside and Ushaw. This year a further conference will take place at Buckfast Abbey. In order that priests can continue to attend such conferences at modest cost the society has launched an appeal for funds. I have made a small contribution; I hope many others will do the same.

Fr Stephen Cross

Of your charity pray for the repose of the soul of Rev. Stephen Cross, priest of the diocese of Lancaster, who departed this life on the 21st day of January 2011, aged 56 years.

Fr Cross was a good friend of the Latin Mass. After several curacies in the diocese he served as parish priest at St. Mary, Barrow in Furness, and St. Thomas, Apostle, Claughton on Brock. More recently he had been in ill health and had been on long-term sick leave. Nonetheless his passing is a great shock.

Father's funeral mass will be at St. Joseph's, Ansdell, at 11.30 on Thursday 3 February, followed by interment at Claughton on Brock. (Note that this is Ansdell, Lytham, not Ainsdale, Southport.)

Visit of Mgr. Wach

Mgr. Gilles Wach, Prior General of the Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest, will be visiting England next weekend. He will be joining us at the 9 a.m. mass at St. Mary Magdalen, Penwortham, on Sunday 1 March. The mass will be celebrated as a missa cantata.

Please pray for the further development of the work of the institute in England, and for the support of our bishops.

Mass on 28 December

The bad news is that tomorrow's traditional mass at St. Mary Magdalen's, Penwortham, is cancelled as the scheduled celebrant has been called away at short notice and no replacement can be found.

For those able to travel the 20 miles to Lancaster the good news is that there is a traditional missa cantata at Lancaster Cathedral tomorrow at 12.15 p.m.

This is the first Sunday since Summorum Pontificum came into effect that the faithful in Preston have not been able to assist at mass in the extraordinary form. Please pray for the erection of a personal parish in Preston with a resident priest.

On Remembrance Sunday, 9 November, the regular traditional mass at St. Mary Magdalen, Penwortham, will be at 8 a.m. instead of the normal 9 a.m. This is to accommodate an earlier hour for the celebration of mass in the ordinary form. The regular schedule will be resumed from the following Sunday, 16 November. The 8 a.m. mass on Remembrance Sunday will be a traditional requiem.

All Souls' Day, November 3, 2008

As the second of November falls on a Sunday this year, All Souls' Day will be transferred to the following Monday, 3 November. Mass will be celebrated in the traditional Roman rite at St. Andrew and Bl. George Haydock, Cottam, at 7.30 a.m. on that day. Thank you Fr. This year the first of November falls on a Sunday, and in accordance with the wishes of our bishops and of the Pontifical Commission Ecclesia Dei, the feast of All Saints will be celebrated on the following Sunday. The regular mass at St. Mary Magdalen on Sunday 2 November will therefore be for the feast of All Saints and will fulfill the obligation both for the feast and also for the Sunday.

This is a long document which I haven't had time to read properly yet, but I am sad to say that it seems to make no mention of the role of the traditional Latin liturgy in revitalising theChurch in Lancaster diocese. More praise for Fit for Mission? - Schools

Bishop O'Donoghue's guidance "Fit for Mission? - Schools" has been widely praised. The latest endorsement has come from Cardinal Levada, the Holy Father's sucessor as Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctine of the Faith, who has recommended it as a model for other dioceses to follow. You can find out more from this article in today's Catholic Herald. Update: Bishop O'Donoghue will appear before the House of Commons Select Committee on Education later this week. I expect that they will not be sympathetic. Let's pray that the bishop will be able to do good work in influencing them. Hat tip to Fr. Paul Harrison.

St. Walburge's update

The future of St. Walburge's church has been raised in the local news again. An interview with Bishop O'Donoghue reported the cost of repairs to be estimated at £3 million; this was followed by a critical piece by polemicist Phil Widdows. What do I think? Here is the text of a letter I sent to the Lancashire Evening Post.

Phil Widdows ("One way or another, we'll end up paying for St Walburge's", 14 Jan) is perhaps a little unkind in his criticism of the Church's failure to cherish St. Walburge's church, but he is surely on the right lines when he reminds us that the Church can, should, must keep the building in use as part of her mission to Prestonians. He is right, too, to imply that the financial cost of doing so - although large - is not so large that it could not be met by a thriving and faithful local Church.

Fortunately a solution is at hand. The Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest has offered to take financial and pastoral responsibility for the building and for the parish, which currently has no resident parish priest. The Institute is a small but growing international religious order dedicated to the traditional liturgy, which was recently derestricted by Pope Benedict XVI. The Institute has revitalised formerly moribund schools and parishes in several countries. One example is the Shrine of Christ the King in Chicago, USA - a church which had been gutted by fire and is now being restored physically and spiritually by the Institute.

I believe the Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest could do the same thing in Preston. I pray that Bishop O'Donoghue will accept their offer to take care of St. Walburge's.

St. Walburge's does not need to close.

Regular traditional mass at Lancaster cathedral

I am delighted to pass on the news that a traditional Latin mass will be celebrated on the fourth Sunday of each month at Lancaster cathedral, at 12.15 p.m. The celebrant will be the cathedral dean, Canon Stephen Shield. Canon Shield has been a great friend to the traditional movement in Lancaster diocese. We are very fortunate to have him. Thank you father! Some of these masses may be sung. This regular schedule will begin in February; the first monthly mass will be on Sunday 24 February, followed by Sunday 23 March, etc. Please see the Google Calendar, to the right of this blog below the map, for details.

The future for St. Walburge's?

Many readers will know of the diocese of Lancaster's Fit for Mission? review, which is proposing to close several churches in Preston. One of these is St. Walburge's, which the review's draft plan has recommended should cease to be a place of worship "at an early date". St. Walburge's church is architecturally outstanding and has benefited from substantial subsidies from English Heritage and the Heritage Lottery Fund; its prospective closure has led to a great deal of discussion in the local and national press. Most of this discussion has focussed on the potential loss of this superb building. Important though that is, it seems to me that worse still would be the failure of mission which the closure of the church would represent. The Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest has offered to take financial and spiritual responsibility for St. Walburge's; the traditional Latin masses celebrated there this year by their Fr. William Hudson were a great success. Bishop O'Donoghue has not yet accepted their offer, but many of Preston's catholics are praying that he will do so. I for one am greatly encouraged about the news of the success of the ICKSP in Chicago and Kansas City, as reported in Fr. Z's blog. Please pray for a similar success story in Preston.

Traditional requiem mass at Lancaster cathedral

Canon Stephen Shield celebrated a traditional requiem for the war dead at Lancaster cathedral last Remembrance Sunday, 11 November. There is an excellent illustrated report at the cathedral blogspot. This was the first traditional Latin mass for many years at the cathedral; the next will be on Christmas day at 12.15.

Christmas masses at St. Mary Magdalen

Sunday mass will be celebrated as normal at St. Mary Magdalen over the Christmas period, but there will be no traditional mass on Christmas day. A traditional Latin mass will be celebrated at Lancaster cathedral at 12.15 p.m on Christmas day. The celebrant will be the cathedral dean, Canon Stephen Shield.

Towers, the parish priest at Cottam, has recently celebrated the traditional Latin mass privately under the provisions of Summorum Pontificum; the mass on 9 December replaces that scheduled at St. Mary's, Great Eccleston, as St. Mary's church is temporarily closed for repairs.
